We worked with fast-growing challenger bank Gatehouse to design and manage Gateway: a bespoke, end-to-end apprenticeship programme to help them inspire, engage and hire more socially diverse talent. That included a mentoring scheme, where we paired 11 promising candidates with a Gatehouse hiring manager for weekly sessions to help them better understand the the career opportunities open to them.
Anisa was a Gateway mentee who went on to complete an apprenticeship with the Bank. Here, she shares her experiences of the apprentice-hiring process – and explains how mentoring helped her make an informed decision about her future.
Anisa, how did mentoring help you decide to do an apprenticeship?
I was exposed to a lot during the mentoring sessions: the different fields of finance, as well as the working environment. I knew immediately that I wanted to do an apprenticeship and get hands-on work experience, while learning at the same time. Initially, I wanted to do accounting and finance, but during my mentoring sessions I realised there was so much more out there in the sector. After that, I didn’t look back at accounting and finance once!
How did mentoring help you prepare for your apprenticeship?
Going to Gatehouse every month really helped me get to know the workplace and the people. The day I started my apprenticeship I didn’t feel any nerves, because I was so used to being there – I wasn’t intimidated at all. Visiting monthly gave me an understanding of the ethos of the office, so I knew what to expect when I first started – which was helpful, as it’s a big jump from school into full-time work.
Can you share your experience of the assessment day?
I learned loads from the assessment day and it really helped me take things further. We were introduced to members of the business and given presentations about Gatehouse and its different products and services. We had an initial activity to do that was used as an icebreaker, but also for them to see how we thought and worked as a team, before being set a task to build a marketing campaign. It was a very good day and not as nerve-wracking as I assumed it would be.
What skills and knowledge did you gain through mentoring?
What you know from school and your own research is nowhere near as good as being in the environment and speaking to real people who work in financial services. I saw so many things I never knew about, and getting to hear about people’s careers within the sector was really interesting. Everyone was very organised – they kept on top of their workload, and thanks to mentoring I’ve also been able to do the same.
