Fast-growing challenger bank Gatehouse were keen to make apprenticeships a key part of their talent strategy, and they also wanted to give back to their local communities by investing in talent from disadvantaged backgrounds. So, we worked with them to design and manage Gateway: a bespoke, end-to-end apprenticeship programme to help them inspire, engage and hire more socially diverse talent.
Altan was one of the first apprentices to join the Bank. Here, he shares his experiences as a Specialist Finance apprentice.
Altan, what have you learned since starting your apprenticeship?
I’ve learned that I enjoy being in a working environment and work well with other people. I spend a lot of time communicating in person, over the phone and on emails – both internally and externally – and I’ve found that easier than I thought it would be.
What skills and knowledge have you gained so far?
Mostly the procedures that take place within a bank, from start to finish. My experience working in the bank has increased my knowledge of the finance industry massively, which will help me a lot in the future.
What’s it like working for Gatehouse Bank as an apprentice?
It's great because you’re not treated as an assistant or a student during your time here, but more as an employee who actively contributes to the bank. I’ve been given my own workload and I’m depended on just as much as I depend on my colleagues, which shows personal achievement.
What three things do you most enjoy about your role?
- Being able to work alongside various different teams and departments. My team tends to deal with colleagues across the whole bank, as well as dealing with external clients and agents.
- The responsibility I have in my role, where I have my own tasks to manage and overcome.
- That I’m constantly learning, even on the job. I find myself asking questions a lot and learning something new every time.
Can you share your experience of the Gateway programme?
The Gateway programme was extremely helpful and guided me through my journey into becoming an apprentice. They understood my decision to avoid university and helped me to better my understanding of both Gatehouse Bank and apprenticeships in general. The Gateway programme was supportive, interactive, and very informative.
What advice would you give to other young people considering an apprenticeship in ethical finance?
I would strongly advise considering this apprenticeship in ethical finance as it offers the relevant qualifications, experience in financial banking (in an ethical and transparent manner) and, most importantly, a paying career.
