Fast-growing challenger bank Gatehouse were keen to make apprenticeships a key part of their talent strategy, and they also wanted to give back to their local communities by investing in talent from disadvantaged backgrounds. So, we worked with them to design and manage Gateway: a bespoke, end-to-end apprenticeship programme to help them inspire, engage and hire more socially diverse talent.
Alex was one of the first apprentices to join the Bank. Here, he shares his experiences as a Treasury Assistant.
Alex, what have you learned since starting your apprenticeship?
I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned in just a few months. Now I’m confident in what I do and explaining it to others.
What skills and knowledge have you gained so far?
I’ve gained a lot of industry knowledge since starting: how the financial markets work, causes and effects, as well as understanding different financial products. I’ve also learned what skills are needed to excel in the financial sector.
What’s it like working for Gatehouse Bank as an apprentice?
It’s extremely nice working for Gatehouse Bank. We get treated like any other employee – they give us lots of responsibilities and have high expectations. It’s a rewarding feeling to be a useful member of a team.
What three things do you most enjoy about your role?
1) Interacting with other counter-parties of the bank through platforms such as Reuters or Bloomberg.
2) Managing the bank's liquidity, short-term as well as long-term.
3) Collecting information on counter-parties, new and old, for KYC purposes and making reports on them.
How would you describe your overall experience with the Gateway programme and subsequently with Gatehouse Bank?
The whole programme was very good as it allowed me to understand and get a feel for the role I may be doing, as well as seeing whether there are any roles that may be more suited for me.
What advice would you give to those considering an apprenticeship in ethical finance?
Get a background understanding on what areas you may be entering, as well as how Islamic finance works and how it operates differently to conventional finance.
